The DuraFlex SW (stainless wall) and DuraFlex HT (high-temperature) lines both use round termination caps with a 3/4-inch mesh screen, but the collar depth and clamp mechanism differ. SW caps seat with a single draw band; HT caps use a two-band lock to handle the higher thermal expansion. If you’re unsure which series you have, check the stamped label on the liner itself, visible from the firebox or roof edge. It reads “DuraFlex SW” or “DuraFlex HT” followed by the diameter and UL listing number.

• Rust staining down the exterior chimney face. DuraFlex caps are 304 or 316 stainless, but the spot-welded seams and mesh screen are the first to corrode in Chicagoland’s freeze-thaw cycle. Once the seam opens, water tracks down the liner and stains the brick below the crown.
• Water in the firebox after rain, especially wind-driven spring storms. The cap’s overhang is meant to deflect rain at a 15-degree angle. When the lid warps or the mesh clogs with leaf debris, water enters the flue directly and pools on the smoke shelf.
• Bird or squirrel nesting material dropping into the fireplace. DuraFlex caps use 3/4-inch mesh to meet code while allowing smoke passage. If the mesh is damaged or missing, animals enter and build nests that block the flue and create a fire hazard.
• Visible tilt, gap, or complete absence of the cap from ground level. High winds off the open prairie west of Downers Grove can loosen draw bands that were never double-torqued. A cap sitting crooked is a cap waiting to slide off entirely.

You can safely check two things from the ground: whether the cap is present and level, and whether the mesh appears intact through binoculars. Do not climb the roof to inspect it yourself. DuraFlex caps install at the flue termination, typically 15 to 25 feet up, and the draw band requires a specific torque setting to seal without crushing the liner collar. Over-tightening damages the liner; under-tightening sends the cap into your neighbor’s yard during the next wind advisory.
